Modern Barn Retreat

Just 1.5 hours outside Chicago, this project is set in a serene location, surrounded by rolling farmland. Paying homage to the site’s rural roots, we demolished an old barn lacking historical or architectural significance and built a new structure inspired by its essence.

The architecture draws from familiar rural forms: the primary red volume references traditional Midwestern barns, while a smaller black bedroom wing subtly echoes the silhouette of a silo.

At the heart of the home is a wide-open living space, where a 16-foot ceiling height sets the stage for family gatherings, music sessions, board games, and movie nights. The challenge was to maintain the openness while subtly zoning the space. Thoughtful design elements create a sense of separation without breaking the flow.

We positioned the building so the morning light pours into the bedrooms – a blissful way to wake up. As the day moves on, sunset washes over the main volume of the barn, filling the living space with golden, cinematic light.

Nature drives the selection of finishes throughout the home. Clear pine clads the ceiling and select walls, while the minimalist oak kitchenette, crafted in Denmark, blends seamlessly into the living area. The space invites the outdoors in, with large windows framing views of wildflower fields and a small private golf course.
